Crete Windsurf Holiday Overview
The expanse of Paleokastro lies approximately 3 hours by car from the airport on the far North Easterly point of Crete. The drive takes you through some stunning scenery along the Northern coast line with the most dramatic views through the winding roads of Eastern Crete. The Journey is rewarded by a part of Greece that is devoid of mass tourism, Some would say this is the Greece of 20 year ago.
Our lasting impression of Crete was the incredible kindness and friendliness of the locals and the unspoiled natural feel of the resort. This is a perfect location for a relaxing windsurfing holiday, with very reliable strong wind in the afternoons, and flat water conditions for all levels.
The Windsurfing In Kouremenos Bay Crete
Around Palekastro the ‘Meltemi’ wind increases its power due the alocal thermal and a funnelling effect that gives the ground wind an additional 2 Beaufort. This makes Kouremenos beach one of the windiest spots in the whole of Europe. This is also why the largest windmill generator park in Greece is in the surrounding area.
The bay offers perfect flat-water conditions due to the cross off shore wind and protected bay area. This meas it is quite gusty and light wind intially but soon cleans up into great flat water blasting conditions. There are small waves further out if you get tired on blasting around on the flat section. This is the ideal place for windsurfers who want to brake-in their first ‘chop hop’.
The entrance to the sea, is marked with buoys and beginners will easily and safely be able to practice around this area. Through the flat water and sandy shore, it is an ideal and effortless entrance. The wind blows side shore from the left nomrally blowing between 4 and 7 Beaufort duringthe summer season of mid May through to early October.
