Windsurfing Holiday Prasonisi In South Rhodes
In the very South of Rhodes is the small wind haven of Prasonisi, approximately a 1-and-a-half-hour drive from Rhodes airport. This resort is dedicated to windsurfing, wing foiling, and kitesurfing with reliable, strong winds and well-stocked centres with the latest equipment. There are two horseshoe-shaped bays connected with a sandbar; one side is super flat water for Windsurfing and Wing foil only, and on the other side there are small waves predominantly for kitesurfing.
Directly on the Beach of Parsonsi there is a small cluster of restaurants, shops and a few small hotels, the best of which is The Oasis Prasonisi. This is a great place to stay for dedicated windsurfers who want to spend as much time on the water as possible. If you want a more luxurious experience, or you are travelling with a non-windsurfing partner or family, we recommend the Atrium Prestige which is just 20 20-minute drive away. This is a fantastic hotel with amazing value for money; we have exceptional prices.
Scuba Diving Holiday In Rhodes
The island of Rhodes stands as the largest among the Dodecanese archipelago, 79 long and 38 km wide, 363 km from mainland Greece. Across both ancient eras and modern times, Rhodes has occupied a strategic position, positioned at the intersection of Europe, the Middle East, Cyprus, and Egypt. This unique vantage point has attracted a multitude of civilizations to its shores, leaving indelible imprints on every facet of its culture.
Nestled in proximity to the Mediterranean's second deepest point, the Lindos Basin, Rhodes offers an array of diving experiences. These range from tranquil shallow waters, perfect for leisurely exploration, to daring ventures into the depths of intricate caves. Remnants of its volcanic past lend the underwater terrain dramatic cliffs, expansive limestone reefs adorned with enigmatic caverns, and seemingly boundless ancient caves that date back to the days of ancient Greece.
Recent years have witnessed significant improvement in the island's marine ecosystem. A rich tapestry of sea life now thrives beneath the waves, encompassing an array of microorganisms and diverse species such as bream, damselfish, grouper, cuttlefish, octopus, moray eels, and squid, among others. Scuba Diving encounters might also include nudibranchs, seahorses, amberjacks, tuna, stingrays, turtles, and even monk seals. The warm, crystal-clear waters attract the migration of species from the Red Sea, introducing the likes of pipefish, soldier fish, rabbitfish, and even lionfish on occasion.
The Spot
Want flat water and waves in the same spot? This is the place! Prasonisi sailing area basically consists of 2 bays backing onto one another with the wind blowing directly across the sandy beach between them. Therefore, you have one bay with offshore wind / super flat water and the other bay with onshore wind / small waves (maximum 2 metres). There is a good rescue service for windsurfers and kitesurfers which makes sailing on the offshore side quite safe and really good fun.
The Wind
The wind in Prasonisi is very strong and very reliable, normally you would expect 25 - 26 days per month of 20 - 30 knots!! It’s the NW “Meltemi” trade wind that blows across the whole Med in the summer. Hot weather in mainland Europe creates a very dry and very stable high pressure which funnels this NW wind through the Greek Islands. Due to local topography, the wind funnels through the island opposite Prasonisi and the large hill behind it Prasonisi will usually have a force stronger than elsewhere on the island. The windsurfing season is May to mid October with the strongest winds in July/August.
The local wind is a thermal effect so it's best in the summer months. It's worth noting that the wind here seems to be dominated by local effects so the windguru forecast doesn't bear much relation to the actual conditions.
