5* Marataba Private Luxury Safari Lodge

Full Board

You will be met from your international or domestic flight to Johannesburg for the 4-hour private luxury transfer to Marataba.

This is a very special place. Marataba South Africa is a malaria-free, private concession within the Marakele National Park. The park conserves 67 000 ha (165 560ac) of the UNESCO-recognised Waterberg Biosphere – the only savannah biosphere in the world! – and Iron Age sites of great historical significance. Marakele is a place of sanctuary, as its Tswana name suggests. It is home to the critically endangered black rhino, the world’s largest colony of endangered Cape vultures, and rare plant species of yellowwood and cedar trees, among a multitude of other fauna and flora. Our trails put guests in the thick of things, getting them closer to nature.

Your stay is on an all inclusive basis with all game drives.

At the end of your stay you will be transferred back to the airport for your onward flight to Victoria falls.

Madikwe

Madikwe is a vast and breathtaking game reserve located in the North West Province of South Africa, near the border with Botswana. Covering approximately 75,000 hectares, it is one of the country’s largest and most exclusive wildlife conservation areas. Unlike some of South Africa’s more commercialized reserves, Madikwe is known for its seclusion, offering an intimate safari experience with fewer visitors and an unspoiled natural landscape. Its diverse ecosystems, ranging from open grasslands and woodlands to rocky outcrops and meandering rivers, create a haven for a rich variety of wildlife and bird species.

Originally farmland, the area was transformed into a protected reserve in 1991 as part of one of South Africa’s most ambitious conservation projects. This initiative, known as Operation Phoenix, was one of the largest wildlife relocation efforts in history, successfully reintroducing thousands of animals to the region, including elephants, lions, buffalo, and the critically endangered African wild dog. Today, Madikwe is home to over 60 mammal species and more than 350 bird species, making it a prime destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.

One of the reserve’s most significant advantages is that it is malaria-free, making it an attractive choice for families and travellers who wish to avoid the health precautions required for safaris in other regions of Africa. The climate is typically warm and dry, with hot summers and mild winters, making it a year-round destination. The dry winter months from May to September offer the best wildlife viewing, as animals gather around water sources, while the lush green summers from October to April provide spectacular birdwatching and dramatic landscapes.

Madikwe is renowned for its luxurious safari lodges, which blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment. These lodges range from exclusive, intimate retreats catering to couples and honeymooners to family-friendly accommodations that offer specialized programs for children. Each lodge provides world-class hospitality, with expert rangers and trackers leading daily game drives in open safari vehicles. Morning and evening drives offer the best opportunities to witness the incredible biodiversity of the reserve, from prides of lions lounging in the golden light to herds of elephants making their way through the bush. Sundowner experiences, where guests enjoy a drink while watching the sunset over the African plains, add to the magic of a Madikwe safari.

Apart from game drives, guests can explore the reserve on guided bush walks, which provide a deeper connection to the land by focusing on smaller details often missed from a vehicle. Walking safaris reveal the intricate relationships between plants, insects, and animals, while guides share insights into traditional tracking techniques used by Indigenous communities. Birdwatching is another highlight, with vibrant species such as the lilac-breasted roller, martial eagle, and crimson-breasted shrike providing endless fascination for ornithologists and casual bird lovers alike.

The reserve is also culturally significant, with strong ties to the local Tswana communities. Some lodges offer cultural experiences where guests can learn about the traditions, music, and folklore of those who have lived in the region for generations. Community involvement is a key aspect of Madikwe’s conservation model, with many of the reserve’s staff members coming from nearby villages, ensuring that the benefits of tourism are shared with local populations.

Unlike the more famous Kruger National Park, Madikwe is a private game reserve, meaning that only guests staying at one of its lodges have access to its wildlife-rich landscapes. This exclusivity ensures an uncrowded and intimate safari experience, with strict vehicle limits at sightings to prevent overcrowding and to preserve the natural behavior of the animals. The reserve is also one of the best places in South Africa to see the elusive leopard and the rare brown hyena, a species not commonly found in other game reserves.

As night falls, the sounds of the African wilderness come alive, with the distant roar of a lion or the eerie whoop of a hyena breaking the silence. Guests can unwind in the comfort of their lodges, enjoying gourmet meals under the stars or sitting around a traditional boma fire, sharing stories of the day’s adventures. The night sky in Madikwe is particularly mesmerizing, with minimal light pollution allowing for crystal-clear views of the Milky Way and constellations that have guided African travellers for centuries.

Madikwe remains one of South Africa’s best-kept safari secrets, offering an unparalleled blend of luxury, exclusivity, and remarkable wildlife encounters. Whether it is the thrill of witnessing a predator on the hunt, the serenity of an African sunset over the bushveld, or the warm hospitality of its lodges, a visit to Madikwe is an unforgettable journey into the heart of the wild.

Days 5 - 8

5* Matetsi Luxury River Lodge

Full Board

Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The Local people call it "Mosi-oa-Tunya", the smoke that thunders and is a waterfall in southern Africa on the Zambezi River at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

There is a magic about them manifested in the towering column of spray when the river is high, the thunder of the falling water, the terrifying abyss and tranquil lagoons upstream in which hippo and deadly crocodiles lurk. Remarkably preserved in its natural state, Victoria falls inspires visitors as much today as it did David Livingstone in the 1860's. The falls and the surrounding area have been declared National Parks and a World Heritage Site, thus preserving the area from excessive commercialisation.

The stunning Matetsi River Lodge is set on a private 15 km stretch of the mighty Zambezi. Just 40 km upriver from the rush and spray of the Falls, Matetsi offers both world-class safari experiences and an idyllic oasis from which to explore, adventure, relax and recharge. Experience stellar five-star services rivalled only by the spectacular natural wonders. Guests, accompanied by knowledgeable, conservation-minded guides, are invited to explore Matetsi Private Game Reserve’s 55 000 hectares of protected and unspoiled wilderness on foot, by vehicle and by boat, while great herds of elephant, buffalo and plains game delight and amaze.

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is one of the biggest and most beautiful waterfalls in the world. It is on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, where the Zambezi River drops down a cliff, creating a powerful waterfall. The locals call it "Mosi-oa-Tunya," which means "The Smoke That Thunders," because of the mist and noise it makes. The falls are about 1.7 kilometres wide and over 100 meters high, making them a breathtaking sight.

The best time to visit depends on what you want to see. From February to May, just after the rainy season, the waterfall is at its strongest, with huge amounts of water crashing down and creating thick mist. This is when the falls look the most dramatic, but sometimes, the mist makes it hard to take clear photos. From June to August, the weather is cooler, and the water level is lower, so you get a clearer view of the falls. September to November is the driest time, and in some parts, the waterfall may be just a trickle, but this is the best time to swim in the famous Devil’s Pool, right at the edge of the falls.

There are many exciting things to do in the area. You can take a boat cruise on the Zambezi River, especially at sunset, to see hippos, crocodiles, and beautiful views. If you love adventure, you can try white-water rafting, bungee jumping from the Victoria Falls Bridge, or taking a helicopter ride for a stunning view from above. There are also national parks nearby where you can go on safari to see elephants, lions, and other wildlife. Visiting the local villages and learning about their culture is another great experience. Whether you want excitement or relaxation, Victoria Falls has something for everyone.
