Why you'll love windsurfing in Spain!
The “meseta” (high tableland of central Spain) and Ebro basin have a continental climate: scorching in summer, cold in winter, and dry. Madrid regularly freezes in December, January and February, and temperatures climb above 30°C in July and August. The Mediterranean coast and Balearic Islands get a little more rain than Madrid, and the south can be even hotter in summer. The Mediterranean, particularly around Alicante, also provides Spain’s warmest waters (reaching 27°C or so in August). Barcelona’s weather is typical of the coast – milder than in inland cities but more humid. In general, you can usually rely on pleasant or hot temperatures just about everywhere from April to early November. In Andalucía there are plenty of warm, sunny day’s rights through winter. In July and August, temperatures can get unpleasantly hot inland. Depending on what you’re after, Spain is a year-round destination. The ideal months to visit are May, June, and September. At these times you can rely on good to excellent weather, yet avoid the sometimes extreme heat – and the main crush of Spanish and foreign tourists – of July and August, when temperatures can climb to 45°C in inland Andalucía; at this time, Madrid is unbearable and almost deserted.

Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands, although one of the least developed. The Island has some stunning topography including vast sand dunes, huge golden beaches and breathtaking volcanic scenery in the interior. Broadly speaking most of the best beaches are along the East coast, the rugged West coast is more rocky and open to the swell of the Atlantic (great for surfing). The North is where you will find the main tourist resort of Corralejo, in the South East you will find some quieter beach resorts (including the windsurf resorts of Costa Calma and Sotavento). Corralejo, being the main tourist hub of the island, has a lot of amenities in the way of restaurants, bars and shopping. In some areas in central Corralejo it can be a little '18-30', but these areas are easily avoided.
You arrive at the airport in Puerto Rosario and head North to Corralejo (25 minutes), by pre arranged private transfer, or car hire. Generally it is a good idea to have car hire although this is not necessary. Fuerteventura and the Canaries are are great year around windsurf holiday destination within easy reach of the UK (around 3.5 hours flight), and a lot of other European departure points. This is one of the most wind reliable short-haul windsurf holiday destinations from March to September, but it can also be great in the winter months, just not quite as 'guaranteed' wind.
A windsurf holiday to Corralejo in Fuerteventura is suitable for all levels and holiday types, including families, singles and couples, of all windsurf abilities. There is a special windsurf lagoon for beginners, a very long and stunning windsurf beach for improvers, plus some small and easy waves if you want it. This really is a great windsurf holiday location to satisfy a wide range of abilities.
As with all of our location we are meticulous about which accommodation we work with, and will only suggest properties that we have personally inspected and know to be good. In Corralejo we have a superb collection of properties to include a stunning deluxe beach resort, spacious families villas and a 'cool' boutique hotel in the centre of town. A Planet windsurf holiday expert can guide you to the best property for your budget and specific requirements should you decide to contact us.

Compared to the rest of the Costa Brava, the huge, fine sandy bay of Roses is very spacious, and by far the windiest spot on the Catalan coast. Located in the south of the bay of Roses, not far from the Club Mistral center, is the medieval village of Sant Marti d’Empuries with its’ famous archeological sites. From there you can reach the small village L’Escala in the southern end of the bay via a beautiful path alongside the beach. The old town, a former fishing village, offers fabulous tapas bars, restaurants, discos and nice, small boutiques.
The bay of Roses has long been well-known amongst windsurfers, and now also amongst kiters. The whole region is a very interesting destination, with numerous attractions and cultural sites. Due to its’ vicintiy to the Pyrenees, rafting and canyoning trips can be offered. The message is clear: a thrilling and yet safe spot where everybody can make the most of their time and money, no matter if they are wave freaks, freestylers, freeriders, kiters or kids.

Lanzarote is situated just 120km off the seacoast of Africa and is the most easterly of the Canary Islands. Formed as a result of volcanic activity about 15 million years ago, it is 70km long and 20km wide with around 300 volcanoes! In 1992 it was declared as part of the World Biosphere Reserve and therefore under the protection of UNESCO. The island has a mild and sunny climate all year round with a truly unique light and spectrum of colours.
There's huge scenic diversity here, on one hand strange rock formations and an almost lunar volcanic landscape - on the other fantastic wide golden or black sandy beaches pounded by perfect waves - real contrast and diversity everywhere you go. You can't imagine that anything could grow here, but fine volcanic stones absorb moisture from the atmosphere and provide suitable conditions for various crops, and grape vines, which produce a very fine white wine!
Costa Teguise has a huge variation in both the quality and type of food available and all tastes are catered for. The standard of accommodation is extremely high and ranges from 4 and 5 star hotels to simple self-catering accommodation. Everything is within easy reach, and all you need is in walking distance. However, we really do recommend hiring a car to take in some of the breathtaking eco-tourist attractions.

Southern Fuerteventura is one of the windiest locations in the Canary Islands due to the geography of the land and mountains inland, creating the 'venturi' effect, like a bottle nose, accelerating the wind out over the beach. The wind here blows all year but is especially extremely strong in the summer months. Prevailing wind direction is off shore - Rescue and safety services are second to none for our recommended spots
There are really three main windsurfing areas in Southern Fuerteventura, these are Costa Calma (the main tourist area with many hotels and a superb watersport centre), Sotavento (home to one of the largest windsurf centres in the world and the Melia Hotel) and Risco Del Paso (a more isolated windsurf spot but with far less gusty conditions than Sotavento). This really is an amazing windsurf location, with the windsurf schools all at a very high standard stocking the latest range of equipment. Wingfoiling and Kitesurfing is also possible at these spots.
It is best to call Planet Windsurf Holidays if you are not sure which location is best for you, and we can walk you through the location. As always our advice is unbiased and honest based on over 20 years arranging windsurf holidays to Fuerteventura.
